Grok 4.8 vs ChatGPT, Claude and Opus: What Could Change?
Compare Grok 4.8 expectations with ChatGPT, GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5: coding, writing, vision, research, live API prices and test prompts.
Published
Grok 4.8 is an upcoming challenger, with no verified public benchmark, API price or callable ID as of October 31, 2026. The meaningful questions are whether it improves difficult coding, image understanding, sustained tasks and writing enough to change your choice. Musk expects a noticeable improvement, but that is not a result against ChatGPT or Claude.
For work now, use Grok 4.7 as the available Grok baseline, GPT-6.1 Sol as a specific OpenAI API / Work / Codex baseline, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 as distinct Claude tiers. Choose a baseline by task, then measure it. Opus is part of Claude, not a separate provider; ChatGPT is a product, not one fixed API model.

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Opus: which versions are we comparing?
ChatGPT's interface, search, files and subscription limits are product features. A comparison inside an App depends on its selected model and enabled tools. OpenAI documents GPT-6.1 Sol for ChatGPT Work and Codex; that does not establish availability in ordinary ChatGPT Chat. An OpenAI API comparison must name its model and endpoint.
Claude is Anthropic's model family and App. Opus 5.5 is one Claude model; Sonnet 5.5 is another. Anthropic positions Opus for long-running coding and knowledge work and Sonnet for a balance of speed and intelligence. These are vendor descriptions, not our head-to-head ranking. Other Claude tiers exist, including Fable; this article selects Sonnet and Opus as practical baselines rather than claiming they exhaust the catalog.
For reproducible testing, write down the exact model, product surface, reasoning setting, tools, test date and provider. A screenshot saying only “ChatGPT beat Grok” leaves too much unspecified.
Grok 4.8 vs ChatGPT for coding and agents
The expectation for 4.8 is better execution across diagnosis, editing, testing and recovery. That follows the Grok 4.7 agent focus and Musk's outlook, not a published 4.8 coding score. OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol documentation lists coding, computer use and professional work; tool calling requires its Responses API. Do not assume a Chat Completions adapter exposes the same tool capabilities.
Use a task with a visible result: fix duplicate charging after an API timeout and retry. Give each candidate the same repository revision, failing regression and budget. Require a patch that preserves successful retries, passes hidden cases and explains the change. Score passing tests, unrelated changes, human corrections, elapsed time and total bill.
GPT-6.1 Sol is a sensible lower-cost OpenAI candidate to test now. Grok 4.7 supplies the released Grok reference. Grok 4.8 earns a place only when the same test demonstrates better completion or cost; a larger parameter count is not sufficient.
Grok 4.8 vs Claude Opus for long tasks and documents
Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 document 1M-token context; Grok 4.7 documents 500K. Grok 4.8's final context window is unannounced. A larger window can fit more evidence but does not by itself prove that a model retrieves it accurately.
Test a financial report, a chart image and an amended table containing one conflicting figure. Ask for the reconciled number, page or row citations and an explanation of which evidence controls. Use the same files and input length that every tested route supports. Grade wrong numbers and unsupported citations, not answer length.
Opus is worth testing when errors or human cleanup are expensive; Sonnet is a useful speed-and-cost baseline. Whether 4.8 overtakes either remains open. In his September statement Musk compared 4.7 with Opus 5.0, then predicted an improvement for 4.8; that is neither an Opus 5.5 benchmark nor evidence that 4.8 beats it.
Writing, roleplay, real-time research and vision
For writing, try a three-scene story about adult fictional characters with fixed motives and a delayed reveal. Compare character consistency, missed instructions, revisions and unnecessary refusals. A permissive tone is not proof of factual accuracy, and no model here is promised to accept every request. App Companions or Imagine features should not be attributed to a text API.
For current research, ask for a dated claim supported by two independent sources and one explicit uncertainty. xAI says current information requires enabled Web Search or X Search tools. ChatGPT search and Claude's research tools also belong to the selected product and configuration; base API text generation is a different test. Either supply the same sources to all models, or explicitly compare their complete tool-enabled workflows.
For vision, try an interface screenshot with one ambiguous control, or a chart whose label contradicts the caption. Musk explicitly identified multimodal performance as something to fix. That makes it a worthwhile 4.8 test target, not a confirmed vision improvement. Grok Imagine's image/video generation is separate from the chat model's image understanding.
API cost: compare a completed task, not just token prices
Illustration only: 100K uncached input + 20K output tokens, without tools, caching, premium modes or retries. These are calculations, not paid benchmark runs. Different tokenizers and reasoning lengths can produce different bills for the same task.
| Model | Standard reference cost | Lowest checked APIMaster route cost |
|---|---|---|
| Grok 4.8 | Unknown | No public route |
| Grok 4.7 | $0.32 | About $0.0191 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $0.40 | About $0.0293 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $0.40 | About $0.1341 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $0.80 | About $0.2682 |
Live input / output ranges are $0.1191–$1.1212 / $0.3574–$3.3636 for Grok 4.7 and 4.6; $0.1464–$0.4756 / $0.7321–$2.3778 for Sol; $0.6704–$2.0000 / $3.3520–$10.0000 for Sonnet; $1.3408–$2.8000 / $6.7039–$14.0000 for Opus, per 1M tokens. Check route-specific cache and long-context billing separately. Compare Grok, Sol, Sonnet and Opus cards before choosing.
Which model should you try now?
For a low-cost Grok baseline, start with Grok 4.7. For OpenAI coding and professional workflows, test GPT-6.1 Sol through a supported endpoint. For Claude, compare Sonnet 5.5 with Opus 5.5 on a difficult task where you can measure whether the extra spend reduces corrections. These are starting choices, not measured winners.
Keep a small acceptance suite and save each model's actual output. When 4.8 opens, add it to the same suite rather than rebuilding the comparison around launch-day claims. Follow the Grok 4.8 release-date tracker and 4.8 vs 4.7 expectations for the launch context.

FAQ
Is Grok 4.8 better than ChatGPT?
There is no verified public 4.8 comparison yet. Name the ChatGPT model and tools, or use an exact OpenAI API model such as GPT-6.1 Sol before evaluating the same task.
Is Claude different from Opus?
Claude is the family and product name; Opus is a tier within that family. This article compares Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 separately.
Did Musk say Grok 4.8 beats Opus 5.5?
The cited statement compares Grok 4.7 with Opus 5.0 and expects 4.8 to improve. It does not provide an Opus 5.5 comparison or measured 4.8 score.
Does Grok 4.8 have a larger context window?
Its final window is unannounced. The 500K figure belongs to Grok 4.7; the Claude baselines here document 1M context.
Can I use Grok 4.8 on APIMaster now?
The 2026-10-31 check found 0 public routes. Use the listed available models to establish a baseline and check the 4.8 card when public access opens.
